چکیده

Toxigenic Clostridium difficile is a frequent cause of infectious nosocomial diarrhea accounting for up to 25% of nosocomial diarrhea cases. Clinically significant disease is thought to be due almost exclusively to C. difficile strains that produce both toxin A and toxin B. Toxigenic C. difficile produces a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal disease varying from asymptomatic carriage to fulminant pseudomembranous colitis (PMC). Relapses after therapy occur in 7% to 20% of cases. Predisposing conditions and the use of broad spectrum antimicrobials in a susceptible patient population makes C. difficile disease increasingly common in acute-care centres.

EFFECT OF AMYGDALUS COMMUNIS ON GROWTH AND TOXIN PRODUCTION OF CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE

It is known that the major etiologic agent of pseudomembranous colitis in man is Clostridium difficile. With respect to traditional use of almond paste in the treatment of infantile diarrhea, we studied the effects of the aqueous extract of Amygdalus communis (AEAC) on the growth and toxin production of Clostridium difficile in culture medium and the rabbit ligated ileal loop. Three groups...

Emergence and control of fluoroquinolone-resistant, toxin A-negative, toxin B-positive Clostridium difficile.

BACKGROUND Clostridium difficile is a major cause of infectious diarrhea in hospitalized patients. Between August 2003 and January 2004, we experienced an increase in the incidence of C. difficile-associated disease. We describe the investigation into and management of the outbreak in this article. METHODS A total of 73 consecutive patients with nosocomial C. difficile-associated diarrhea wer...

Pseudo-outbreak of Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea (CDAD) in a tertiary-care hospital.

The objective of this study was to describe a pseudo-outbreak of C. difficile in a hospital, following a change in the method used to detect the toxin. In February 2002, there were two cases of CDAD and in March 7 occurred, coinciding with a change of the test (from detection of toxin A to toxin A/B). An outbreak was suspected. Active surveillance and education of staff were started. A CDAD cas...

Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea in a tertiary care medical center.

This retrospective, case-control study aimed to identify variables associated with the incidence of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) in acute care facilities and to specifically identify the relationship of fluoroquinolones and acid suppressive agents in the development of CDAD. Seventy-one symptomatic patients positive for C. difficile toxin A or B hospitalized for at least 72 ...
